Bashing getting tiring
published: Wednesday | April 16, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE ANTI-American attitude and the US bashing are getting tiring. Unless you want to live in fear of terrorism, or live like the oppressed people of Afghanistan or Iraq, under the rule of an elite few and their self-serving interpretation of the Koran, how about having and showing some respect and support?

Too many of the letters and editorials in your papers sound almost as if they are defending Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Could these writers have forgotten about the attacks on the US September 11, 2001? It took much money for Al Quaeda to support the 9/11 terrorists while they studied and trained for their suicide attacks. Saddam used the "oil for food" money to build up his Palaces and Military while the people of Iraq suffered. You don't have to research too much to learn about Saddam Hussein's regime. Use Amnesty International or other non-American sources if you do not trust what is in the news. After 9/11 the use of pre-emptive action is justified. Eliminating the powerful fanatics proven to use their wealth for terrorism is a just cause. Anti - Iraqi war writers inevitably state, "Bush for oil". The Iraqi oil will be used to rebuild Iraq in the wake of Hussein's regime and the removal of it. Stabilising the oil producing Middle East is important to the whole world, not just President Bush. Along with liberating the people of Iraq, we are eliminating a major threat to our country and others. President Bush is an easy target but to think the decisions are all his is nonsense. The US is a democracy with many checks and balances. Several intelligence agencies from around the world have established that Saddam and son's are a threat to the US as well as other countries. The coalition for this war is over 45 countries strong.

Whether I like President Bush or not, or, are for or against this war, I have to trust our leaders. They know much more than the media, letter writers, or I. Unlike what is reported, the majority of the world and the majority of the US support these efforts. If diplomacy always worked, America wouldn't have had to lose hundreds of thousands of men to defeat Hitler and free Europe, and Americans wouldn't have had to kill Americans to end slavery. Humanity has reverted to war to better the world they live in as far back as history is recorded.

May be the US should pull out of Iraq. Then may be America should pull out of every foreign country and stop the flow of foreign aid everywhere, spend it all on securing our borders and Homeland Security, and turn a blind eye to all the oppression, starvation, and terrorism. The US spends billions every year on these problems in other countries without any expectations of gain. The world benefits from the American way. Capitalism and freedom allow the US to develop and supply medicine, food, technology, and much more, around the globe. Is America arrogant? May be some times a little. But we are a benevolent and caring Country. Freedom, liberty, equality; these are important to us. American's will fight for them. Are you with us or against us?

I am, etc.,
