Happy birthday Nadz
published: Wednesday | April 23, 2003

Nadz

RAPPER NADIRAH 'Nadz' Seid celebrated her birthday last Saturday, and as a gift her label, M-Phatic, decided to throw her a surprise party at the Waves Roof Lounge, which is just outside of Fort Clarence in Portmore, St. Catherine.

The party was actually a concert, with her label mates taking the chance to perform for those present, backed by the M-Phatic band of a mini-dreadlocked and female Flavia on bass guitar, Neison Hardy on drums, Andrei on the saxophone and Conrad on keyboards. The band was on top of the their game for most of the night, blending well to support the acts when not performing engaging music of their own. Andrei was particularly good, embarking on solos ever so often which were the icing on the cake.

First up was the willow thin and Afrocentric N'Tisha, who performed well and energetically, to put it mildly, contorting her body and doing mini-skanks throughout a two-song set, head wrap firmly in place.

The deejay duo Madniss and Psycho followed with a stint largely dependent on gimmicks - one of the two deejays would keep asking the other the words to their songs - and were entertaining even if they did go a bit too long.

A BIRTHDAY PARTY OF SORTS

Then again, it was a birthday party of sorts, so there was not much in the way of time constraints for the acts. Another duo, Wasp and Danny D also performed, and like the one prior to their own, their set, aside from paying respects to the lady of the hour, centred mainly around girls and sex.

There was also a cameo from Bostonian Wayne Marshall, who delivered a lightning fast and clever rap as well as becoming a human beat box, both to great acclaim. Not surprisingly, there was quite a lot of rapping on the night, with performers such as Charms and 'Neegus Fireman' getting in on the act with varying degrees of success. A surprise popped up in the form of Paco, who did not look a day past 10 years old and is a resident of the area. Aside from displaying the latest dance moves he also took not one but two stints at the microphone, impressing with his bravery and confidence as much as his deejaying skills.

Nadz' manager Stephen Ventura played MC for the night and was hilarious throughout.

The second half of the party was where things really got moving. After something of a band change, singer Camar - who has toured Europe with Nadz - took front and centre. Starting of with bits and pieces of songs such as R. Kelly's Ignition, he performed an original song he said he had written for Nadz called Destiny which went over quite well.

A good performer, he laughed and chatted with the crowd in-between songs, interspersing the phrase 'Oh my God' quite often throughout.

A Stevie Wonder song was up next, before a cover medley of songs such as Wayne Wonder's No Letting Go and Mario's Just A Friend. He impressed even more with Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing, dispelling anything that even approached doubt about his ability to sing.

FOOT IN HIS MOUTH

Kafinal and Sambo, on their way from Ocho Rios, also put in an appearance. Comedic as usual, Kafinal said he was 'under the afluence of incohol' and put his foot in his mouth more than once, but managed to cleverly extricate it. They were the first to actually sing Happy Birthday, delivering a Motown-flavoured version before singing Dedicated To The One I Love, Drive By, Rape, Inna Di Lane and closing with Cooking Dat Pwile. "Yuh know why mi chat foolishness? 'Cause mi jus' love si people smile," Kafinal declared and that they did.

Camar would return and sing Gaye's What's Going On and Wonder's Ribbon In The Sky before being joined by Nadz. The two sang the rapper's original I Hate This before they showed off a few of their dance moves such as the 'Spaghetti'. Rapper Charms would join them for another original, the sexually-charged It's On You.

They forgot to cut the cake, but before the night came to an end, Ventura announced his and the club's proprietor's intentions to establish a regular live music show at the Waves Lounge in the near future. After a few more songs and after the hour hand swept past 12, the birthday party came to an end. By the way, she was surprised.
