Internet vital for growth

THE EDITOR, Sir:
ACCESS TO the Internet is vital if we are to compete in the global economy. This is a technology that can take goods and services to the privacy of a person's home anywhere in this world. Very soon companies need not build expensive office accommodation for employees who work in Accounting, Marketing, and Purchasing etc. as it will be practical to give employees a terminal and ask them to work from home.
This is the direction in which the technology is taking us, as far as work is concerned, and some of us who are resisting it will just have to go there kicking and screaming.
With this in mind I am recommending that the Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology negotiate with the Finance Minister to roll back the 5% GCT increase on the portion of the telephone call associated with dialling up for Internet connection. While some may say that this is relatively small, we must think of ways of encouraging those who are not working to get online.
