Blasphemous!
published: Wednesday | April 23, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WITH RESPECT and no intent to insult the letter writer Kevin Clancy (The Gleaner, April 17) who is certainly entitled to his opinions, to say that God has come to the people of Iraq in the form of American GIs and Marines is blasphemous under Christian, Muslim and Jewish theology.

Are the American GIs and Marines the ambassadors of Jesus? What battle did Jesus fight in? Which children did he kill? Though their high technology and skills have us mesmerised, what miracles have the American GIs and Marines performed? The people of Iraq may eventually benefit from the destruction of the un-Islamic statues, but has God sent another messenger bearing witness that American GIs and Marines are his vice regents on Earth? Has God instructed the Christians to blow off the arms of little children? No more than God did not order the Muslims to destroy the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, or to kill innocent people. THESE ARE ALL ACTS OF MEN. That God allows certain things to happen does not mean that He condones these things.

The commonalties between the Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths are something which most people do not study. They study the differences and ridicule one another's culture without understanding. The God of Moses, Jesus and Mohammad assured the Believers that there will be a Day of Reckoning, a Day of Accounting, or a Day of Judgement. Whoever sows seeds of hate between people and lies against God will have to account for it.

I am, etc.

A believer
