More houses for Portland by Jan 2004
published: Wednesday | April 23, 2003

NATIONAL HOUSING Trust (NHT) contributors who live or work in Portland, will, by January 2004, be offered the opportunity to buy fully serviced housing lots at Fair Prospect in the parish.

The NHT broke ground last Wednesday for the development which will yield 92 lots of roughly 600 square metres each.

In a statement yesterday, Earl Samuels, Managing Director of the NHT, said the Trust expected to have the area completed with proper drainage, roads, sewerage and water by the end of this year. This would clear the way for the sale of the lots by the start of the new year.

WIDE PURCHASING OPTIONS

Of the 92 lots, the NHT would reserve some for the construction of housing units, therefore offering wider purchasing options for contributors.

Harry Douglas, Minister of State in the Ministry of Water and Housing, who was the guest speaker, stated his Ministry's commitment to ensuring adequate water is supplied to the scheme.

The Fair Prospect scheme is being developed on lands acquired by the NHT when it assumed responsibility for the portfolio of the defunct Jamaica Teachers' Association Housing. With that in mind, Member of Parliament for East Portland, Hon. Dr. Donald Rhodd, who also participated in the ground breaking ceremony, called on the NHT to make special provisions for teachers some of whom had made deposits on the property while it was under the control of their organisation.
