MORE THAN 50 pounds of compressed ganja, a gallon of hash oil, three illegal firearms, 148 assorted rounds of ammunition and two sticks of dynamites, were unearthed on Wednesday during a joint operation between members of the Special Anti Crime Task Force (SACTF), and the Public Safety Unit in the Mountain View Avenue area of Kingston.

One man identified as Paul Thomas, 39, of a McIntosh Drive address in Kingston, was arrested in connection with the find, head of the Public Safety Unit, Deputy Superintendent Terrence Bent, told The Gleaner on Wednesday.

The guns seized were a Desert Eagle .44 semi-automatic pistol, a Berita 9-mm pistol and a home-made handgun. The ammunition included rounds for a number of semi-automatic pistols and 12-gauge shotgun.

The compressed ganja was reportedly found in 24 packages, ready for export, DSP Bent said.

Reports are that the drugs, weapons and ammunition were found in the vicinity of the Mountain View Avenue area where the police conducted a raid a week ago. A Tek-9 sub-machine gun was recovered during that operation.

Senior Superintendent Donald Pusey who led the operation, said his team had been targeting violent-prone inner-city communities, especially the areas close to the Long Mountain Housing Development, where rival gunmen clashed two weeks ago, halting the construction work for several days.

Allegations are that the gunmen were fighting over who should get work on the construction site.
