Tax burden without benefits
published: Sunday | April 27, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHEN WILL this heavy taxation end? Every year ever since I can remember a new tax is introduced. When it is not a new tax, it is an increase in the old taxes. I have to ask the question, why are Jamaicans being taxed so heavily and when will they see the just reward for these years of sacrifice? Every year is going to be hard, which year is going to be easy?

Carrying such a heavy tax burden, Jamaicans should enjoy a lot of amenities such as free health care, free education to grade 11, income support for the needy, and infrastructure should be comparable to that of First World countries. However, it is very clear that Jamaica is nowhere close to providing such amenities, so why so much taxes? No one will want to invest in the country because Jamaican consumers have no money to spend.

The Budget's main focus is servicing debt, and it is evident that this Government continues to borrow, so is it safe to assume that Jamaica's economy will continue to suffer like this forever?

I am, etc.,
