Ernst & Young rewarding top entrepreneurs
published: Wednesday | April 30, 2003

Thomson

ERNST & YOUNG has launched its 2003 Caribbean Entrepreneur of the Year programme.

Nominations are being accepted by Ernst & Young for participants in the programme. A top entrepreneur will be selected for each of five industry categories and an overall Caribbean Entrepreneur of the Year will be selected from the category winners.

"This programme is an opportunity for Caribbean entrepreneurs to be recognised, rewarded, and to have the opportunity to represent our region in Monte Carlo at the World Entrepreneur of the Year programme," said Gregory Thomson, executive director of Republic Bank Limited. Republic Bank is the main sponsor of the programme.

DIFFICULT TIMES

"We in Jamaica consider that we are going through difficult times," said Lascelles Chin, winner of the retail distribution sector category in 2001. He said Guyana was in a worse economic position than Jamaica but the spirit of enterprise there had propelled a Guyanese to the forefront of the Caribbean in 2001.

The deadline for submission of nominations is June 30. A conference and banquet will be held at the Ritz Carlton in Jamaica on September 26-27, when the winners will be announced.

"Our plan is to rotate the business conference and awards banquet across the Caribbean," said Angella Persad, programme director of Ernst & Young Caribbean. Last year it was held in Trinidad and this year, for the first time, it is being held in Jamaica.
