THE JAMAICA Chamber of Commerce (JCC) says it will work with vendors' organisations in lobbying for the Jubilee Market to be rebuilt.
Located in downtown Kingston, the century-old market was destroyed by fire on Sunday night. This has impacted more than 1,000 vendors, who used the building to sell meat, produce, clothing and haberdashery.
In a release, the JCC said it "learnt with shock and regret" about "the destruction of the famed Jubilee Market in the heart of downtown Kingston." It noted that the market has been an integral part of the capital city's past, serving as an important commercial meeting place.
"We note with particular regret and sympathy, the fact that some vendors suffered extensive or total losses of their wares," the JCC said. "This cannot be anything other than a major setback for an enterprising group of persons who are a very major factor in the vibrancy of downtown Kingston's commercial district."
The Chamber said it was fully committed "to working alongside the vendors' organisations in lobbying for the speedy rebuilding of the Jubilee Market."
