Step down, Dr. Davies
published: Friday | May 2, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I THINK it is high time that Finance Minister, Dr. Omar Davies, step down or be asked to step down so that someone else can take over the position. Dr. Davies has been in this position for over the past decade and though he has done a good job in keeping inflation at single digits, the economy has not grown during his tenure and has amassed the country's heaviest debt to date,

It seems to me that there should be term limits set for the post of Finance Minister owing to the awesome responsibilities that falls within this 'mother of all ministries'. Such a ministry is too important, too large and too influential to be indefinitely headed by one individual. In my view, a Finance Minister, whether performing well or not, should not serve for more than one governmental term in this post.

Dr. Omar Davies has served as Finance Minister for over a decade. It is time for some fresh blood to take over the mantle of this Ministry.

I am, etc.,
