PRESIDENT OF the Trelawny Sugar Company, Livingstone Morrison, has given the assurance that the Long Pond Sugar Factory will not be closed.
"I have been given the mandate to ensure that the business of cane farming and sugar manufacturing in Trelawny is transformed into viable operations; we're not about closure ... it's just not on," said Mr. Morrison, during a meeting with cane farmers at the Trelawny Sugar Company on Thursday.
With almost two months remaining, before the crop closes, the objective, according to the president, is to take off the cane as quickly as possible while ensuring that the factory is performing at its optimum level.
Delroy Anderson, Chairman of the Long Pond Vale Royal Cane Farmers Association, was quite pleased at the comments made by Mr. Morrison. "We are quite appreciative of the fact that Mr. Morrison has seen it fit to meet with us, the cane farmers of Trelawny, and is also prepared to work with us. Consequently, we are prepared to provide him with our firm support so as to ensure the viability of the Sugar Industry in the parish," said Mr. Anderson.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Morrison said that he had full and frank discussions with the cane farmers on a range of issues that are of concern to both farmers and managers. The opportunity was used to brief the farmers on a number of initiatives that are being pursued in order to improve the performance of the factory.
