Police shootings under investigation
published: Saturday | May 3, 2003

THE CONTROVERSIAL shooting of two persons yesterday morning by the police, near the intersection at Molynes and Waltham Park roads, St. Andrew, sparked a demonstration by residents and has led to a probe of the incident by the Bureau of Special Investigation (BSI).

In another incident at nearby Chisholm Avenue, yesterday, a police party who went to close down a dance before daylight was attacked with missiles and their tyres slashed by angry patrons.

Allegations are that the first incident occurred while the police were chasing 21-year-old taxi driver, Michael Nugent, who has since been slapped with several charges. The charges include driving without a public passenger vehicle licence, no insurance, disobeying police orders to stop, resisting arrest and dangerous, reckless and careless driving.

According to police reports, about 9:30 a.m. a team of policemen, along with personnel from the Transport Authority, were carrying out an operation in the Constant Spring area when a car was signalled to stop. The driver reportedly disobeyed the instruction and continued driving, with the police in pursuit. The car eventually stopped at the intersection of Waltham Park and Molynes Roads and the driver ran from the vehicle.

The police further reported that the man who turned out to be Nugent, was captured and escorted away in a police car, after which missiles were thrown at the police vehicle. At this stage several shots were fired by one of the lawmen. It was subsequently discovered that two men were shot and injured. They were taken to hospital by the police.

BSI detectives are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact them at 967-0644.

And a group of policemen who went to close down a dance at premises at Chisholm Avenue near Richmond Park, lower St. Andrew, were reportedly attacked with missiles by patrons when they attempted to turn off the sound system early yesterday morning.

It is alleged that the tyres of several police service vehicles were slashed by the patrons. The police had to call for reinforcement.
