THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE RECENT destruction of the historic Victoria Jubilee Market in downtown Kingston is a tragedy but it also presents us with an opportunity to test whether or not we are serious about the re-development of downtown Kingston and all the positives that this re-development will bring.
For years business interests have clamoured for the removal of vendors from the streets of Kingston, but as even some business leaders were forced to admit, some of the proposed sites were truly not fit for the vendor relocation programme.
The opportunity that now presents itself, is the chance for the relevant authorities to re-build the Jubilee market to "first world" standards that would encourage even the most timid shoppers to enjoy the variety of goods and bargains that are offered downtown.
Such a facility, spacious, clean and organised with proper facilities, both for the vendors themselves and the general public, would have vendors flocking to be a part of it.
Such a facility could be used as the benchmark for future market developments, not only for Kingston but for the rest of Jamaica.
We have an opportunity to get it right this time.....the question is "are we going to use it"?
I am etc.,
