Spurring efficiency

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE CONCEPT of linking performance with salary increases and incentives is one that should be applauded. This would spur efficiency and ensure adequate output in the workplace. The awareness of being monitored, on the job, by an agent who will eventually assess one's performance will undoubtedly 'power' the required performance, especially if such performance results in a desired reward salary increase or incentives.
While not a panacea for economic ills, linking performance with salary increases and incentives is a 'stimulant' for economic growth, based on its potential for enhancing the production of goods and services. Nevertheless, the concept is not without its pitfall. Based on the relative seriousness of salary increases and incentives, as well as the industrial relations flavour which could engulf the issue, it is important that the persons who are vested with the onus of assessment be extremely objective.
