Commending NHT
published: Saturday | May 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I COMMEND the use of the National Housing Trust (NHT) contributions to provide affordable housing for the citizens of Jamaica. Decent housing is an essential aspect of socioeconomic development and goes a long way in improving the self-worth of individuals and families.

I would like to object to the idea of building swimming pools as part of the plans for these housing developments. It has been proven over and over again that swimming pools are expensive to build and maintain. I am almost sure that after a few years the pools will have to be filled in with earth and converted into gardens. Also we need to consider our sometimes chronic water shortage situation.

Instead of swimming pools, I suggest that each of the buildings be equipped with a common lounge area that can serve the dual purpose of a game-room and study hall. It should be equipped with items such as a big screen TV, pool table, table tennis table and computers connected to the Internet. This option is easier to maintain, will have a longer lifespan, and be more beneficial to most of the residents. I am etc.,
