Spread the tax
published: Sunday | May 4, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

CRITICISM OF Dr. Omar Davies' tax increase - to fill the budget gap - continues to pile on, some for political mileage, personal and or other reasons. When all is said and done, Dr. Davies, or any of the financial wizards will still have to fill the budget gap. Where will the money come from?

Critics of the budget/tax increase (most short on solutions), for their credibility, should make sure they pay their fair share of the tax burden. For too long only the people who take home a paycheque pay tax through compulsory deduction. Employers in many cases have not turned over money collected for taxes to the Government.

PAYS NO TAX

I think that more than half of the population pays no tax on income. This has been the case for far too long. How much tax on income do the musicians/DJs, promoters of bashment, higglers, private taxi and bus drivers, fishermen who are recipient of Government subsidies, club owners and other business entities pay?

My solution to this tax problem is that the Government should widen the tax base and ensure that everyone who earns income make an annual declaration. There should be laws that guarantee swift punishment; including long jail time, confiscation of property and passports for non-payment of taxes. There will be resistance from most who would be affected by the law. Every attempt will be made and every plot put in place to undermine the law if enacted.

I am, etc.,
