THE EDITOR, Sir:
The time has come when someone has to take the bull by the horns or bell the cat and bring to your attention a matter that was previously brought to the attention of your predecessor and the Member of Parliament for the constituency sometime ago where both men made a personal inspection on a fact finding mission.
The subject I am referring to is the Black River Bridge, St. Elizabeth, which is in a state of disrepair and dilapidation to the extent that a great fear and anxiety exist that one day soon it will collapse under the weight of traffic that traverse it daily as the main artery for commercial purposes to other parishes adjacent to St. Elizabeth.
It is indisputable that since the inspection by those gentlemen, the bridge has further deteriorated. My examination has seen the bolts and nuts that hold the floorings, side railing and the overhead structures, all are corroded and rusted and anyone who sees it must wonder how long they will hold together all the iron works that made the bridge.
The parish has a Public Works Superintendent and also a Superintendent for Roads and Works for the Parish Council and whether their offices fall under the domain of Local Government or due diligence, they are responsible to oversee these things, report them to the authorities concerned that the exigency of the matter warrants their attention.
I am, etc.,
