July 7 court date for teens on murder rap
published: Wednesday | May 7, 2003

THE TWO teenaged boys who were arrested in connection with the shooting death of their 16-year-old schoolmate, Leo O'Sullivan, in March of this year, are slated to appear in the Half-Way Tree Court on July 7, for a preliminary hearing into the incident.

The hearing should have been held earlier, however, the delay was necessary to facilitate their sitting the CXC Examinations in June.

The two, Cleon Thompson, of South Street, Old Harbour and Sheldon Dwyer, of Red Ground district, both 17 years old, were arrested and charged for murder by detectives from the St. Catherine Homicide Unit on March 7, after investigations led them to believe that the teens may be criminally responsible for O'Sullivan's death.

O'Sullivan, who was an 11th grade student at Old Harbour High, was attending the annual inter-house sports day at the institution on Tuesday, March 4, when he accompanied two of his friends to the old railway station near the school. He reportedly went to relieve himself in bushes when an explosion was heard. The two friends made a report to the Old Harbour police and, on investigating, the police found O'Sullivan with a bullet wound to the abdomen. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On March 19, two weeks after their arrests, the boys were offered bail in the sum of $300,000 each when they appeared in the Corporate Area Gun Court.

A post-mortem revealed that O'Sullivan died as a result of injuries from a gunshot.

However, the police have still not been able to locate the weapon believed to have been used in the incident, neither have they found the St. Catherine man whom they believe could assist them in furthering the investigations.
