Keeping abreast of SARS
published: Monday | May 12, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

A RECENT news item reports that some resourceful Taiwanese, faced with a shortage of surgical masks for protection against an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) have adapted new bras to make improvised facemasks. They split each bra into two cups, attached straps, and voila.... two face masks from each bra! The resulting bra masks were said to be highly effective and satisfactory.

We may admire the resourcefulness of the Taiwanese, and even consider their ingenuity to be somewhat amusing. However, this brings into sharp focus the importance of our keeping abreast of developments relating to SARS so that we may, if necessary, take appropriate precautions!

I am etc.,
