THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) will host a public lecture and discussion tomorrow at the St. John's Methodist Church Hall on Duke St. (off Humber Ave) in Montego Bay, starting at 5:30 p.m. Communications lecturer and policy analyst, Dr. Hopeton Dunn, is scheduled to speak on the topic 'Digital Dilemmas: Ethical Challenges and the Emerging Technologies in Media and Communication.'
Some of the issues and questions to be discussed are: Who runs the Internet?, Who could be monitoring your private e-mail or listening in on your cellular or wired telephone messages and what does the World Health Organisation (WHO) say about emissions from the cell-site tower near your home or school?
The lecture is open to the public and will form part of a new UWI series of public presentations at venues outside of Kingston and St Andrew. The series provides an opportunity for citizens, business leaders, community leaders, media practitioners, students and members of the professional community to participate in discussions which are not frequently available in other urban centres and rural areas. The event is being organised by the Office of the Deputy Principal at Mona in collaboration with the School of Continuing Studies, UWI.
