'New Jersey Link Up': A good event
published: Wednesday | May 14, 2003

NEARLY ALL dances held in Portmore are known for their late starts. 'New Jersey Link Up' was no exception on Sunday night.

The event, held at La Roose on Port Henderson Road, Portmore, never got into full swing until 3:00 a.m. when the majority of the patrons arrived. Truth is, the late start was no fault of the promoters as when The Gleaner team arrived at minutes past one on Monday morning, Stone Love was doing what sounds do at an event where patrons come out late play to an empty venue.

Several hits from Sanchez and some from the disco era came in for attention from the selectors, who promised a barrage of artistes as well as a daylight ending to the night's proceedings.

They fulfilled one of their promises, since the event did not end until dawn.

However, the dance turned out to be a good one, as the sound systems and selectors, Stone Love, Corner Stone and the vulgar Fire Links, took turns in playing crowd favourites. In addition, they all wished the moms 'Happy Mother's Day' in their own crass but unique way.

SUPPORTING THE LADIES

By midway their stints they were supporting the ladies with several songs and some raunchy precursors. Among the songs played were Capleton's Tek It Off and Sizzla's Pump It Up. The ladies responded by gyrating to the instructions of the selectors.

One of the highlights of the 'link up' was the abundance of expensive liquor. Moét, Alizé, Hypnotiq and a host of other alcoholic beverages were on sale. Of course, patrons who wanted to partake in such luxury had to fork out a minimum of $500 for the smallest sized Alizé.

Apart from a few persons, most patrons stuck to the regular alcoholic beverages and most 'profiled' for the ever present 'video light'.

However, that aside, the event ended well and was only tarnished by a brief verbal exchange between Beenie Man and Baby Wayne. That aside, New Jersey Link Up was not a bad event.
