Values and attitudes

THE EDITOR, Sir:
PLEASE PERMIT me to share with your readers my perspective on values and attitudes.
On Saturday, May 10, 2003, I had the privilege of attending an appreciation ceremony for a lady who is just awesome, Mrs. Norma Darlington, immediate past principal of Shortwood Teachers' College. As I looked around the Marjorie Myers Hall at the beautiful decorations that were obviously painstakingly done, words like, "friend, facilitator, and mother" stood out against a background of green and yellow.
I looked at people gathered from all over Jamaica and at Mrs. Norma Darlington, the guest of honour; I listened to the accolades in tributes and songs and although the meanings of the words values and attitudes were emblazoned in the hall, I could not help but wonder how many people were aware that we were all at the function because of our own values and attitudes. There was no grand announcement of the function as being one about values and attitudes but that is what it was all about. Clearly Mrs. Darlington epitomises positive values and attitudes worthy of emulation and those who took the time out to show appreciation for her invaluable contribution did so because of a shared value system.
Oh how we could revolutionise this country, if only we all believed in the sanctity of life and were able to speak with one voice against the criminal elements in this society. If we all could realise that no one is neutral as far as values and attitudes are concerned. It is not "them and us", it is all of us. We are all a part of this values and attitudes campaign. We contribute positively or negatively. God bless Mrs. Norma Darlington and all those who are able to recognise the value of such a phenomenal woman.
