Training for grade 5 contractors
published: Wednesday | May 14, 2003

THE NATIONAL Contracts Commission has launched an exercise to improve the skills of the pool of persons available to the public sector for small jobs or contracts.

In October last year the Commission signed a memorandum of understanding with two of Jamaica's top training and certifying agencies, the Human Employment And Resource Training/National Training Agency (HEART/NTA) and the National Council on Technical Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET).

The MOU commits the three government entities to a joint venture which allows for training if necessary, and certification for registration of contractors in the NCC grade 5 category.

The agencies will offer joint certification in 12 areas, which sets the minimum standard of skill for artisans/tradesmen who wish to work for public sector entities:

  • Air-Conditioning
  • Auto Mechanic
  • Carpentry
  • Drywall Construction
  • Electrical
  • Joinery
  • Masonry
  • Painting
  • Plumbing
  • Tile Laying
  • Upholstering
  • Welding
