Absorbing the tax increases
published: Sunday | May 18, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

CONSUMERS WILL have to absorb the effects of increased taxation measures to be levied on imported goods after Finance and Planning Minister, Dr. Omar Davies, flies the tax gate. The four per cent cess on all imports of capital goods and raw materials will drive business to pass on the increased costs to the over-taxed consumers.

Why should a little country like Jamaica carry such a heavy burden?

Every year the Government introduces new tax measures or an increase on old taxes.

People are afraid to invest in Jamaica because we can see that not even the dead are spared from tax in Jamaica. Mr. Patterson and Mr. Davies publicly demonstrate their intention to fix the budget with taxes that penalise success and do not encourage growth in the economy.

I am, etc.,
