published: Tuesday | May 20, 2003

AFTER INVESTIGATIONS, the police report that they have identified the writer of a letter in last Friday's Gleaner about a 16-year-old who said she was raped by a teacher.

The police confirmed that the letter writer attends a high school in St. Andrew, but said that certain information in the letter is incorrect, including the address where her mother works. In addition, the police said that the writer's physical and psychological conditions are being checked.

The Gleaner wishes to assure readers that prior to publishing the letter all necessary checks were done to verify the authenticity of the letter writer and attempts were made to identify the child's parents. In addition, the matter was handed over to the police for investigation and intervention.
