PNP candidate pulls out of Local Gov't election
published: Wednesday | May 21, 2003

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

ANOTHER PEOPLE'S National Party (PNP) candidate in St. Elizabeth has pulled out of the Local Government elections race citing personal and family commitment as his reasons.

Speaking at an emergency meeting on Saturday, Councillor/Caretaker for the Pedro Plains division, Marcel Ebanks, told Chairman of the Party's Region 5, Donald Buchanan, and other members of the divisional executive that due to personal and family commitments he will not be able to contest the seat when the elections are called.

"I am still committed to the PNP and anyone who succeeds me as candidate for the division I will work with he or she. It wasn't because of any doubt on my part, or that I had no chance of winning the seat. However, the reasons which led to my resignation are genuine", Mr. Ebanks told The Gleaner in an interview on Monday.

When contacted by The Gleaner, Mr. Buchanan said he was not in a position to comment on the matter.

Mr. Ebanks was appointed in December of 2000 to represented the PNP in the division, where the JLP's Vernon Ebanks is the sitting councillor.
