Heavy rain hits local sporting events for six
published: Sunday | May 25, 2003

PERSISTENT RAIN forced the abandonment of most sporting events across the island yesterday.

Sports affected included football, cricket, golf and tennis.

The Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association/JNBS second leg Super League semi-finals scheduled for Emmet Park were abandoned and the Duhaney Park/Santos and Boys' Town/JDF clashes have been rescheduled for Wednesday.

Fourth-round matches in the Jamaica Cricket Association's national leagues were also washed out. If possible, play will start today.

This weekend's matches are: Super League - St. Elizabeth vs St. Ann at Alpart, Lucas vs Melbourne at Nelson Oval, Kensington vs St. Catherine CC at Kensington Park, St. Catherine Parish vs Kingston CC at Chedwin Park, Jamaica Defence Force vs Westmoreland.

In the Senior League it's Clarendon vs Police at Jamalco, Boys' Town vs Tivoli, Manchester vs St. James at Manchester High, Trelawny vs Hanover at Elletson Wakeland, Portland vs St. Mary at Folly, St. Thomas vs Kingston & St. Andrew CA at Goodyear Oval.

Third-day action of the National Golf Trials, incorporated into the North Coast Classic was also suspended. Play, weather permitting, will resume today at 8:00 a.m. at SuperClubs Golf Club in Runaway Bay.

Competitors who finished their rounds yesterday will begin a new round while those who have not completed the round will resume play at the hole where they were when play was suspended.

Also hit was the Futures tennis tournament in Montego Bay. Rain stopped play at about 12:30 p.m.

The doubles final was completed as well as one singles semi-final while the other semi-final was abandoned in the third set and is scheduled to be resumed at 9:00 this morning with the final to follow.
