Our sugar industry

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE SUGAR industry has been in Jamaica ever since the Spaniards settled here. Jamaica was almost one big sugar plantation with the Emancipation of slaves.
Today, however, the sugar industry is the backbone of Jamaica's agriculture and employment and a large number of persons depend on that industry in one way or another, for their existence. This includes all the wives and children of sugar workers.
The sugar industry has very old and inefficient machinery in operation. There is also need for extensive replanting, which produces higher yield.
With collective planning, participation of all concerned, hard work and confidence, our sugar industry can survive.
