Call for more Ja consulates in Africa
published: Wednesday | May 28, 2003
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM a Jamaican residing in Lusaka, Zambia for almost 9 years now. I am writing to complain about the lack of Jamaican consulates on the continent of Africa; more especially in the southern Africa region. Only in Nigeria where there is a Jamaica Consulate which is extremely inefficient. This is no fault of the staff but just the location itself.
I would like to appeal to the appropriate authority, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to consider setting up a consulate in South Africa as soon as possible. This will enable nationals and visitors to the island to have easy access for passport renewals and visas respectively.
With the new regulation that states that all nationals residing outside of Jamaica to have the nearest embassy handle their passport renewals etc., it is causing a lot of hardship on the nationals. I sincerely hope that this request will be considered by the relevant authorities. Thanking you.
