Dowdie settles for third
published: Friday | May 30, 2003

ATHENS, Greece, CMC:

FORMER JAMAICA national sprint champion Peta-Gaye Dowdie finished third at the rain-affected Filothei Women Gala on Wednesday night.

Competing over 100 metres, Dowdie clocked a slow 11.85 seconds as Ukraine's Yelena Pastushenko secured victory in 11.56 seconds, ahead of Athina Kospia of Greece in 11.84.

Dowdie, the 1999 and 2000 Jamaica national 100-metre champion and 1999 Pan Am Games bronze medallist, has been struggling to recover world-class form since undergoing knee surgery two years ago.

She was also the 200-metre gold medallist at the 2000 US National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Outdoor championship.

Bad weather conditions created problems for the Filothei organisers but local star Niki Xanthou, Ukraine's Inga Babakova and Linda Fergat, of France, emerged with good wins.

Xanthou won the long jump at 6.70 metres, Babakova cleared 1.98 metres for the high jump title and Fergat snatched the 100-metre hurdles in 13.34 seconds.
