By Petulia Clarke, Staff ReporterTHE FAMILY of murdered police constable Michael Campbell is scared stiff. Reeling from the shock of the death, his wife and sisters are reluctant to share information with the public, lest his killers should find them.
Constable Campbell, 40, who was attached to the Motorised Patrol Division, was killed in downtown Kingston, Saturday evening. The police reported that he was chased by two men on foot into a car park, at 101 Orange Street, where he was shot several times all over his body. The gunmen escaped on foot.
STILL IN SHOCK
His wife, Carlene, was reluctant to speak with The Gleaner yesterday, still in shock at what had happened. However, his sister, Lydia, said that she still could not believe that it was true.
Constable Campbell, the fifth policeman to be killed by the gun since the start of the year, was yesterday remembered by a neighbour as a quiet, very calm person.
"He was a guy who could be home and you wouldn't even know, because he was so quiet," his friend, Jervis Johnson, said. "I almost fell to my knees when I heard, because it's hard to believe that someone so good could die that way."
He said that the entire neighbourhood was in grief.
The mood was similar at the Motorised Patrol Division where several of Constable Campbell's colleagues were dressed in black.
"It's depressing... unfortunate," Superintendent Q.W. Morgan, head of the division, said. "It's sad that we've been giving protection to the public and we can't have a member that is not able to go freely about his business." He added: "As citizens we need to look at what is taking place in the society and work with one common cause to get rid of the guns and criminal elements and come with a solution to prevent the causes."
Constable Campbell leaves behind four children. He served the Force for 13 years. The police are continuing investigations into his murder.
