An attack on our lifestyle
published: Tuesday | June 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE IMPOSITION of GCT on certain items (such as legal fees and books for recreational purposes) seems to be a direct attack on the lifestyles of the people, as promoted by the leaders of government. It is my view that the members of the Book Industry Association of Jamaica are to be steadfast in their bid to have government remove GCT from these items.

In a country where the literacy level is so low, especially among our males, we should seek to find ways in which to make these items easily accessible rather than imposing taxes on them. These taxes only serve to put an even higher price tag on education.

Taxes are needed for the effective running of the country, but, reading maketh a full man. In the best interest of our country, our leaders need to assess the possible damage their actions could cause to the future of this country.

"Where there is no vision the people perish".

I am etc.,
