Peter Brady re-elected vice chairman of IMO sub committee

DIRECTOR GENERAL of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, Rear Admiral Peter Brady, has been re-elected Vice Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Standards of Training; and Watchkeeping of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Admiral Brady, who was the 2003 Vice-Chairman of that Sub-committee, was re-elected to serve in that capacity for 2004, by delegates at the 34th Session of the sub-committee in London. The session dealt with issues such as unlawful practices associated with certificates of competency; measures to enhance maritime security; large passenger ship safety; validation of model training course; casualty analysis and training of crew in launching and recovering operations of fast rescue boats and means of rescue In adverse weather conditions.

To prepare member States for implementing the new International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPC) In July 2004, a course framework for maritime security officers including ship security officers/company security officers and port facility security officers was prepared at the conference. The formal courses should be ready for delivery in a few months after the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) reviews the report of the Session.

Other matters addressed related to procedures for updating the so-called 'White List of countries that were found to give full and complete effect to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping, 1995 (STCW '95); draft amendments to the STCW Code and guidance on education and training requirements for fatigue prevention, mitigation and management.
