Diminishing the mighty Goliath
published: Wednesday | June 4, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

TODAY, I learnt from the newspaper that an 11-year-old boy representing the USA placed 7th in the recent Scripps Howard spelling-bee competition, and being the recipient of US$750.00. The only mention of any other winner was of the first place winner from Dallas. Having just read your on-line paper, I now have the surprise that the winners from second to sixth place were not representatives from the USA. Nowhere was any mention made of third place winner, our Jamaican Trudy McLeary.

Congratulations Trudy!

I know that I should not be surprised about the USA's position concerning the abilities of other nationals. However, given their very vocal and public preoccupation with the negatives (actual and perceived) about Jamaica and its nationals, I have always held this futile hope that something positive would be considered newsworthy. But that would be diminishing the mighty Goliath USA.

I am, etc.,
