A BUSINESSMAN who reportedly shot and seriously injured a policeman in May Pen, Clarendon, was remanded in custody when he appeared in the May Pen Resident Magistrate's Court, on Monday.
Tyrone Dunkley, 37-year-old businessman of Glenmuir Road, May Pen was charged by the May Pen police with illegal possession of firearm and shooting with intent on Saturday. Dunkley was charged after he reportedly shot and seriously injured Constable Clayton Robinson, attached to the Special Anti-Crime Task Force in Western Park, May Pen.
According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) liaison officer for Clarendon, Constable Cornel Stewart, on Friday at about 11:50 p.m., Constable Robinson and two women were travelling in his white Toyota Corolla station wagon motorcar when it developed a puncture. He reportedly stopped, removed the tyre and took it to have it repaired.
The women who were left behind in the car, were reportedly held up at gunpoint by a 16-year-old youth. Dunkley, who was passing in his car with a companion, became suspicious and stopped. He reportedly pulled his licensed 9mm pistol and with the assistance of his friend, relieved the youth of a home-made firearm. Constable Robinson on returning, approached the car and Dunkley allegedly fired several shots which hit him in the face, left breast and left hand.
The policeman was taken to hospital where he is said to be in critical condition. The 16-year-old youth was handed over to the police and Dunkley taken into custody. His licensed 9mm pistol was seized by the police and has been sent to the Police Ballistics Laboratory for testing.
Dunkley is scheduled to reappear in court on Wednesday, June 4.
