published: Wednesday | June 4, 2003

THE 'GET Ready for Work Career and Education Expo' will be staged for the third time, today and tomorrow, in the ballroom of the Hilton Kingston Hotel, Knutsford Boulevard, New Kingston.

Highlights of the two-day expo will be: An official opening ceremony this morning at ten, at which the Minister of Education, Maxine Henry-Wilson, will be guest speaker.

A special seminar for guidance counsellors and other school representatives, titled 'Recognise your skills; Make Them Work For You'. This is sponsored by AAMM Credit Union and the JTA Credit Union, with presenters Dr. Leahcim Semaj of the JobBank and Dr. Lawrence Jones, Professor Emeritus from North Carolina State University.

Other school personnel and parents those who affect students' career choices- will also participate in the seminar. An invitation has also been extended to the Ministries of Education in other English-speaking Caribbean countries to send representatives.

A series of workshops and seminars around the theme "Techno-logy in Education" will be the focus of day 2, tomorrow. These are presented by the Jamaica Computer Society Education Foundation with sponsorship from the British Council and Digicel.

An open forum on the subject "Developing Career Skills for the 21st Century" will be featured on June 5. Four young entrepreneurs will tell their success stories in 'We Did It; You Can Too'.

Four major areas of employment of the future will be highlighted through talks Information Technology; Tourism; Agriculture and Health Care.

An Internet cafe will allow visitors to access websites relating to education and careers and use an on-line assessment tool called 'The Career Key' which will point them to career areas which best suits their abilities and interest.

Grooming and resume clinics will be presented by the JobBank.

The expo will feature approximately 50 exhibitors including tertiary level institutions, career options, financial institutions and professional bodies.
