An efficient way to wash your car
published: Saturday | June 7, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE FOLLOWING is a simple, inexpensive and efficient way to wash your car. It will save you money, protect your car from rust and conserve on the use of water. The procedure is as follows:

Add one cup of kerosene to one bucket of plain water. Dip a soft piece of cloth into the mixture and partially wring it out. Use the damp cloth to thoroughly rub the body of the car as if you were soaping it. Rub out all the dirt spots. Repeat until the entire body of the car is done. Because kerosene and water are immiscible, stir the solution each time that you dip the cloth in it. Next use a dry soft rag and wipe the dirt from the body of the car. Do this as if you were polishing it. Do not wash it. Just wipe. That's all.

WITHOUT THE EXPENSE

Your car will now look as best as it can. It will not only look as if it had been polished, but will behave as if were. Water will bead on it just as if it were polished. You will therefore get all the protection that polishing gives without the expense. Best results are obtained in the cool of the day or where the sun is not beating down on the car.

The same solution can be used to clean the car's interior but this must be done first when the water is clean. Simply wet a clean soft cloth with the solution. Wring it out and then use it to rub out the dirt on the dashboard and all the synthetic surfaces. You won't have to wet the cloth more than twice or thrice to do the entire interior. After this, simply use a dry piece of soft cloth to polish it. The same method may be used on leather upholstery with excellent results.

In the case of fabric upholstery, use a clean coarse brush to apply the solution to clean the soiled areas. You don't have to do the inside of your car more than once per month. Just polish it with a dry soft piece of cloth during the ensuing weeks. Do the same to your rims and even the most fancy ones will look spanking new. You will be amazed at the results.

After you have finished washing the car, use the water which will be dirty by now to wash the tyres. Dip a coarse brush in the solution and use it to scrub the tyres. When you have finished all else, use the remaining water to wash the area under the fenders.

Ladies should enjoy doing this and will get a great sense of satisfaction when they see how well their cars look. The real beauty of this is that there will be absolutely no need for any of those expensive car care products. Use a pair of latex gloves to protect your hands from the kerosene and the dirt. Also open up your car to the fresh air to eliminate the traces of the kerosene scent.

The single bucket of water will clean your car no matter how dirty it is. Try it and you will see. As you proceed the process will become plain to you. You will save time and money. The sum of the individual savings will result in national savings. We will therefore be helping ourselves as well as the national economy. Those who are engaged in the car wash business will realise huge savings by using this method.
