Hydel still on top

SPANISH TOWN:

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Hydel Prep maintained their lead after the second day of the Nestle-sponsored Inter-Prep Track & Field Championships at G.C. Foster College yesterday.

Hydel, 54.5 points, boast a 20.5-point lead over many-time champions Vaz Prep, who moved up to second place with 34. Closing out the top five were Stella Maris, 31, Ardenne and Our Lady of the Angels Prep, with 25 each.

Yesterday saw the completion of four more finals with four different teams capturing the crowns. In the high jump Class Two girls, Sherice Grant of Stella Maris claimed the gold medal with a height of 1.26 metres. Arianne Hammond of Hydel took silver with 1.6 metres, the same height as bronze medallist Shanique Martin of Wolmer's.

Vaz Prep's Shanna-Kay Creary her team its first victory of the meet as she took the girls Class One high jump, clearing the bar at 1.42m. Shelique Bailey of Stella Maris and Dio Gordon-Whyte of Our Lady of the Angels both tied for second with 1.36m.

Wolmer's Gavin Barnes captured the Boys Class One long jump final with a leap of 5.08m. Jhuvan Francis of Covenant took ailver with 4.89m and Peter Beckford of Lannaman's claimed the bronze with 4.88m.

In the day's other final, Marzel Miller of Quest, took the gold in the boys Class Two long jump with 4.86 metres. Covenant's Rodie Malcolm snatched silver with 4.35m, the same distance as bronze medallist Glen Forsythe of Portmore Missionary.

When the final day of competition gets underway at 11:00 a.m. today it should be a straight-up rivalry between the defending champions and Vaz as both teams have a lot of qualifiers going into the finals.
