Fenton, Campbell in spotlight

LORRAINE GRAHAM Fenton and Juliet Campbell shone at yesterday's IAAF Grand Prix II athletics meet at the Primo Nebiolo stadium in Turin, Italy.

Campbell triumphed in the 200 metres, winning in 22.79, ahead of Romania's Ionela Tirlea (22.80) and Christine Arron of France (22.92).

Fenton followed that performance up to easily take the women's 400m in 50.45. Mbacke Thiam Ami of Senegal (51.59) and Mireille Nguimgo, of Cameroon (51.99) were the other placegetters.

Debbie-Ann Parris had to settle for third place in the 400 hurdles after her time of 55.49 was well behind those of Tirlea (54.10) and the US's Sandra Glover (54.82).

Compatriot Ricardo Williams ran 10.29 for third place in the men's 100m dash, behind Coby Miller (10.10) of the US and Nigeria's Uchenna Emedolu (10.19). 1996 Atlanta silver medallist Frank Fredericks of Namibia finished a disappointing fifth in 10.45.

In the 110 hurdles, Jamaican Maurice Wignall returned 13.72, finishing just out of medal contention in fourth place. Ron Bramlet of the US (13.60) was first whileSouth Africa's Shaun Bownes (13.62) and Arend Watkins, also of the US (13.64) took the next two best places.

Davian Clarke was a second place finisher in the 400m, returning 45.30 to be just behind Eric Milazar of Mauritius, 45.28, and ahead of the US's Leonard Byrd (45.88).

In the 400 hurdles, Jamaica's Kemel Thompson finsihed third (48.95) and Neil Gardner fifth (49.87).

Angelo Taylor of the US (48.94) and Llewellyn Herbert of South Africa (49.54) palced first and second.
