THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM a 22-year-old resident of the United Kingdom, but Jamaican by nationality. I have been a student for a number of years, now I am a Website designer and developer. I am returning to Jamaica to spend some time with my family whom I haven't seen in years. I will be in the country for three months. While I am there I am expected to carry on with my job, which I can do effectively if I am able to obtain the Internet at home.
I live in Lucea, Hanover. From I was a child my parents applied to the phone company for service. I phoned the company today and spoke to a few of their representatives, to ask them about the possibility of obtaining telephone service.
They said that my family is still on the waiting list. Now it is going to cost me over £20,000, for the three months that I am planning to spend in Jamaica, it may even cost me my job. I am a young person who is just trying to do her job, with the help of Cable and Wireless. The only answer they are giving is there is no service in our area, when less than a hundred metres from my home a Cable and Wireless customer has.
So I would like to know if this is how one of the island's largest companies treat young people or individuals who need this service for all the appropriate reasons.
I AM DESPERATE. As I am returning on the 14th of June and there is a possibility that I may lose my job. It is very hard for young people as it is to find jobs, so please help me to keep mine and in the process help others. I would like them to be aware of this issue through your media.
I am, etc.,
