THE EDITOR, Sir:
THOUGH NOT a gambler as such, I have always been a staunch supporter of the legalisation of casinos in Jamaica. The introduction of casinos would greatly expand our tourism product offering and could potentially become a major fillip towards the sustainable economic growth and development of our country.
Now that the government has softened its stance on the issue, notwithstanding the continued opposition by the Church and other forces within the society, it must now place the issue on fast-track and devise a decisive plan of action. We cannot afford another useless commission to study this issue, as our national development deserves immediate and serious attention.
The historic town of Port Royal has had on the drawing board for some years now a development plan aimed at transforming it into a world class heritage attraction and a cruise ship port, comprising museums, entertainment facilities, shopping, restaurants, and similar offerings. However, the lack of serious investment commitment has halted this brilliant concept.
Casinos should be introduced to the town of Port Royal in the first instance, with the possibility of another area(s) being considered after, say, five years of exclusive operation in Port Royal. Given the history of Port Royal and the plans to convert it into Jamaica's heritage and cultural mecca, casino gambling could provide a necessary means to realising this end.
We have everything to gain from the introduction of casino gambling. It is time we stopped the dilly-dallying.
I am, etc.,
