Unions for J'can teachers
published: Thursday | June 12, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS disturbed to read your feature (Jamaican teachers in UK unhappy with treatment - 11-17 June), despite suspecting that this sort of practice did occur and has to be stopped.

Would you please inform all readers who work in schools that it is not the case that they may not join unions. Far from it. Teachers may join ATL, NASUWT or my union, National Union of Teachers provided that they are qualified to teach in their own country - we do not recognise the racist bar on teachers from overseas.

Teaching Assistants may join either UNISON or GMB. They are welcome to contact our office for more information.

I am, etc.,

RAY SIROTKIN
