Urban Knights level series
published: Thursday | June 12, 2003

TWO TEAMS, one trophy and one last chance.

When the equation is worked out, only one will walk away with the Berger Division One basketball title.

The battle between defending champion Tivoli All Stars and challengers Urban Knights culminates at the Stadium Courts on Saturday night and if the first two games are anything to go by, it will be heatedly contested.

Tivoli won Saturday's first game 91-75 but the Knights remained in the hunt by levelling the best of three game series 1-1 after Tuesday's 59-53 win.

"We want the trophy as badly as they do and we don't expect them to give it up just like that," said Knights coach Clifford Brown.

Had Tuesday's game been the decider, Urban Knights would have won without much of a fight due to Tivoli's lacklustre performance.

The West Kingston team secured the first quarter lead at 13-12 but while the lead changed hands a few times, the Knights played a more consistent game and at the end of the second and third periods led 32-30 and 43-39 respectively.

David Martin scored 20 points and bolstered his game with 10 rebounds and four assists, however his teammates were seemingly in the spirit of giving, allowing Brown's team bragging rights at the end of the night.

"We started out on the wrong footing so the game wasn't flowing. We didn't execute according to plan, some of the players had an off night and sometimes we even ended up playing selfish," said Tivoli's coach Dennis Hutchinson.

"Saturday will be a different thing. We have put ourselves in a must-win situation. We have no other game to play and we need to win the trophy so definitely an improved performance is required," he said.
