Barbican, Vineyard Town to fight for crown
published: Thursday | June 12, 2003

IT TOOK a dreaded penalty kick off to decide the finalists for this Saturday's KSAFA Major League.

The Emmet Park doubleheader ventured into fading light while Barbican and Vineyard Town emerged winners and booked their spots in next season's Super League.

In the curtainraiser, Barbican, courtesy of a stoppage time goal from Nigel Ellis, managed to cancel out the 1-0 deficit Meadhaven held over them coming into yesterday's decisive leg semi-final. As a result, Ellis' strike sent the team into a penalty shoot-out which Meadhaven lost 2-0.

Kicking for Barbican, Ellis and Neil Wright both found the agile and alert Meadhaven goalie Andrew Gibson in the way. On the other hand, Jahmaran Johnson and Nicholas Walker found the back of the net. Kevin Virgo, Barbican's huge goalkeeper who prayed when sudden-death extra time ended, got his large palms to all shots taken by Meadhaven.

In the second game, which featured Police versus Vineyard Town, the law officers enjoyed a good first half hour, getting into the vineyard defence at will. This attacking mode paid off, as after 26 minutes as Derrick Jackson netted. However, Ricardo Burke cancelled out that lead, striking in the 31st minute making it 1-1.

After a tight second half, the game went to penalties which Vineyard won 5-4.
