Munro - still shining
published: Monday | June 16, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THANKS FOR publishing my first letter 'Munro College and the Media' on January 24, 2003. There I briefly highlighted the powerful and influential effect the media has on the nation, may it be positive or negative.

Since then the media houses have been showing much interest in the progress of the College. They have conducted interviews on the grounds of the College and via the telephone.

The vibrant college choir, which I made mention of, has been invited to represent the college at different functions. This is positive publicity and can only enhance the growth, development and self-image of our young men. This in effect will contribute to a better college, community, country and the world at large.

I must pause here to congratulate heartily the School's Challenge Quiz Team for taking home to "the city set upon a hill" the prestigious trophy along with its entire accolades. The surrounding communities and parish was at a hush as we all watched and prayed that Munro would come out victorious and victorious they came. This victory came at a good time in the life of the College as it seeks to produce "Young men of honour pursuing excellence and leading by example."

I must take time out to congratulate Manchester High School (one of the coaches and the Principal are my friends) for a well-fought battle. To the media houses you too have done a tremendous job even after so many weeks the Sunday Gleaner of May 18, 2003, has a picture of the young men and one of the coaches receiving one of the many prizes.

I am having one area of concern at Munro College and that is the sporting arena. Not enough (as customary) is being seen or heard, knowing that Munro is in competition at the very top-level in sports. I know Munro has the potential to shine brighter in sports. This potential seems to be hidden under a bushel and needs to be again put on the lamp stand for all to see. All I believe it needs is some hard work, dedication, good coaching and some generous sponsors. The Quiz team has shone brightly after ten years and it can be done in sports also.

Congratulations also to the coaches Miss Hoskins and Mr. Miller, the Principal Dr. Earl Hendricks, the Vice Principal Mrs. Sonia Neil and all the other wonderful team players of such a prestigious institution, Munro College- In arce sitam quis occultabit: "A city set upon a hill cannot be hid".

I am, etc.,
