CABLE & WIRELESS Jamaica (C&WJ) said its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network, which will give customers the capability of accessing the Internet from their laptops as well as their mobile telephones, is now operational.
In a release Monday, the company said its GPRS network was the first in Jamaica, and came ahead of the launch of its new Global System Mobile (GSM) network.
CAPABILITY
"The GPRS network will give customers the capability of accessing the Internet 'on the go' over a wireless network from their laptops (using a special card) and from their mobile phones," the company said.
The release quoted Gary Barrow, C&WJ's president, as saying that GPRS capability was the first of many exciting features that customers would enjoy from the company's new mobile network, to be launched shortly.
VARIOUS NEEDS
It said a number of C&WJ's employees were currently using the GPRS network and the company would, as of yesterday, begin discussing with its customers their various needs.
C&WJ said GPRS is an 'always-on' data transmission technique based on packet technology versus traditional circuit switching. It delivers high data rates with dynamic and efficient use of the existing spectrum, minimum call set-up delays and some unique capabilities.
