We are our own problem!
published: Wednesday | June 18, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The society seems to be caught once again in a flurry or bewilderment regarding the issue of youngsters and in particular, young girls having sex usually with older men, on our public buses. These are buses usually adapted to accommodate such heart-ripping activities and are characterised by loud music, heavy tints and an inability to be filled.

Mr. Editor, I must confess my bewilderment as to the cause of this flurry of bewilderment. When we stop teaching and emphasising national pride and self-esteem; when we disregard the fear and principles of God and entertain blatant devil worshipping, what else can we expect?

Isn't it illegal for a public passenger vehicle and moreso, one transporting our children to be so tinted that you cannot see inside? It is also illegal for loud music to be played on public passenger vehicles...Enforce the law! It is illegal for a vehicle to carry more persons ('schoolers' are persons) than it is licensed to carry; Enforce the law! Commissioner Forbes, without prejudice. Enforce the laws of the land, 'petty' and major!

Parents are first in the order of responsibility for this decadence. They nonetheless have a duty to check the clothing, take the girls for checkups and to otherwise teach the youngsters.

The Prime Minister needs to get his 'Value and Attitudes' Programme in the proper perspective. He is accountable! The Opposition Leader, too, is accountable and must be called to answer!

It cannot be overlooked that school is really home during our years of scholastic pursuit. We spend more time at school (or at least should) than anywhere else. Principals and teachers must assist and should not relent.

The media and moreso the electronic media also have a major role to play. What has happened to censorship? Now I can listen to my radio and hear the most recent 'badwords' at times; listen to music on the street or in car and learn all manner of sexual practice. We are our own problem! We accept it, write about it, comment on it! We do nothing! Problems don't solve themselves; people resolve problems.

We are all to blame; those of us who sit by doing nothing! Start holding persons publicly accountable then they will implement and enforce policies. I call upon the myriad of associations and the (electronic) media. Do something! And in the process, HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE.

I am, etc.,

SEYMOUR HARLEY
