Examine your performance, 'Commish'

THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS interesting that Police Commissioner Francis Forbes, in an article printed in The Gleaner on June 17, 2003, can 'examine the facts' surrounding the performance of the CMU and then ask the public to 'be the judge'.
Wouldn't it be equally interesting if the Commissioner 'examines the facts' of his own overall performance, from his appointment, and let the public again 'be the judge'. Tell the public, Commissioner, how many different crime fighting squads you have formed - and disbanded to deal with Jamaica's crime problem and why. Tell the public the 'facts' about corruption in the Police Force and the numerous cases where officers try and execute civilians on the spot. Tell the public why Jamaica has become a major transshipment point for illegal drugs and tell them about a Police Force that gives up its authority to dons.
If the CMU truly was disbanded because it was not effective, the public can accept that. If the Commissioner's effectiveness on the job is based on his ability to make "a safer Jamaica for rich and poor alike", then let's find out from the public if they feel "safer" than they did prior to Mr. Forbes's appointment as Commissioner. As the Commissioner said, let the people "be the judge".
