Bolt too classy for rivals

Bolt... 20.28 to win 200 metres at National Championships last night.

WORLD JUNIOR 200 metres champion Usain Bolt ran a blistering 20.28 seconds last night to clinch that sprint crown at the Jamaica Track and Field Championships at the National Stadium.

The VMBS Boys champion, who before the race said he had nothing to prove and nothing to lose, outclassed World Championship silver medallist Christopher Williams (sixth).

Another Williams, Latonel took the silver while Ricardo 'Flash' Williams got the bronze.

In the 110 hurdles, Maurice Wignall recorded 13.54 on his way to taking the gold medal. National record holder Christopher Pinnock.

In the women's equivalent, Aleen Bailey completed the sprint double with a 22.59 seconds clocking beating Juliet Campbell (22.69) and Beverley McDonald (23.05).

Meanwhile, No. 1 ranked sprint hurdler and national record holder over the distance, Brigitte Foster, clocked 12.69 seconds on her way to retaining her national title, beating Commonwealth champion Lacena Golding-Clarke (12.90) and Vonnette Dixon (12.93).

In the half mile events, schoolboy Jermaine Myers clocked 1:49.42, relegating last year's champion Marvin Watts (1:49.48) and Aldwyn Sappleton (1:49.98) into the other medal places.

The women's equivalent, saw Michelle Ballentine clock 2:03.52 in a very close race to beat Mardrea Hyman (2:03.66) and Kenia Sinclair (2:03.69).

Tardiness infested the meet with action late on all three days - and by more than a hour. No explanations were forthcoming at up to press time last night.

Robert Barnes was one of the big achievers on yesterday's final day, winning the jaevlin for men in a record 68.97 metres. His effort erased the 60.50m mark set back in 1993 by Hughbert Knight. The athlete who attends New York Technical (formerly of Titchfield high and UTech) won ahead of Commonweath Games decathlon gold medallist Claston Bernard (59.80m) and O'Keile Stewart (58.56).

The women's javelin crown went to Kateena Riettie who threw the instrument 48.44m. Shauna-Gay Stephens won the silver medal with a throw of 37.96m and Jenifer Kelly's effort of 32.25m earned her the bronze.

Andrew Gutzmore ran his two fellow competitors (Joseph Grant and Kevin Webb) 'red' forcing them out of the race before stopping the clock at 35.05.02 to take the gold in the men's 10,000m.

Top female junior high jumper Peaches Roach soared to 1.84m in taking the gold in the women's high jump, beating Sheree Francis 1.81m into second. Shaunette Davidson also leaped 1.84m to take the women's Under-20 high jump.
