August Town, Maxfield in final
published: Sunday | June 22, 2003

AUGUST TOWN and Maxfield advanced to the Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association's (KSAFA) Syd Bartlett final with contrasting 3-1 aggregate wins.

In the first game of the doubleheader played at Emmet Park yesterday, Maxfield, who went into their semi-final with a 3-1 lead from the previous leg, squandered a few chances especially in the latter part of the second half to end 0-0 with Cooreville. Cooreville, who needed to win by three clear goals, lacked the purpose and fight up front as key man Steven Morrissey had very little help.

The August Town/Allman Woodward game was a much more entertaining affair as the very hungry Allman Woodford took the fight to August Town from the opening whistle. Marlondo Sterling, who looks a lot like Harbour View's Fabian Taylor in appearance and play, was a constant worry to the August Town backline. He got good help from Nyrou Beadle.

Despite the flow of the game, it was August Town who took the lead in the 22nd minute through Kirk Williams who expertly met a cross with a volley which gave goalkeeper Delroy Walters no chance.

Just a minute later, Allman Woddford were on even terms - for the game - as Wayne Walker fired past his namesake Damion Walker from the penalty spot. It was the last time Walker would be beaten as, despite his diminutive stature, he stood tall in goal to preserve his team's two-goal advantage from the previous week.

"The difference today is that the team played a more composed game and knowing that we were already in the final we concentrated more on midfield play," said coach Cedric 'Bull' Allen of Maxfield.

August Town's coordinator, Kenneth Wilson, said he was confident his team would preserve its two-goal lead and advance to the final.

"We were not worried that they they got back in the game so early as we knew that this was our time," said Wilson after his team's win.
